travelling on own

Hi all,
My husband and i we are planning to go for a holiday on august this year to Kenya , we had thought of travelling on our own without leaning on any tour operator since its not our first time to be in Kenya.please let us know of any challenge we might get or the advantage of getting involved with operator before we make our conclusion. Tnx

I would find an East Africa safari specialist and look at both options. On our first trip to Africa we thought a tour would be best, but wound up on our own. It was a good decision for us and gave us a little flexibility and the whole trip went off without a hitch.

"traveling on our own"

where?

Do you plan to rent vehicle and do a self-drive? And, at the same time have your eye out to spot game once in reserves/parks?

There are a few Trip Reports from those who've done self-drives. So depends on how adventurous you are. But, as you've already been, you no doubt know the roads are terrible, lots of traffic, few road signs, and then once in parks/reserves - do you want to be watching the roads and spotting game at the same time? That has to be your decision.

Realizing of course, you can create your own itinerary and arrange for your own private vehicle w/guide who knows where he's going and is trained to spot game/drive at the same time, knows where the petrol stations are, etc.

Your choice, I guess.

Have you seen canadian_robin's self drive trip report in Kenya/Tanzania? http://www.fodors.com/community/afri...ugust-2009.cfm

We've done a self drive in Namibia but only guided safaris in Kenya. For us there's simply too much traffic on the roads (not so much in the parks, though some think that's the case too, but getting to and from the parks) to consider self driving in Kenya an enjoyable vacation. I'm not the most patient driver in the best conditions

But since you've been there so you know what it's like. I'm sure many have done it and enjoyed it.

this a good ideal mercyne my two friends & i have tried but it wasn't possible,it require much of sacrifice, alot of attention no one to inform where the game are,you end up discourage ,we tried but at the end of the journey we had leaned with Boyd tours and travel to reduce the hassle and to make our dream come true .anyway its upon you
