Travel Visa - Jordan

Is this a visa we should secure prior to leaving the states or can we obtain this at the airport in Amman?

Do a Google search and find the official Jordanian website for specifics. Some countries permit travelers from certain countries to obtain VISAs upon arrival, others not.

When we traveled we obtained our VISAs prior travel. But then living in NYC it's rather easy to obtain most VISAs without having to send ones passport.

U.S. citizens can obtain a visa upon arriving at the airport in Amman or on the ferry from Aquaba if crossing from Egypt with no problem. You don't need any photos and it's a lot less expensive and less time-consuming compared to getting it from the consulate. Why worry about sending off your passport when you can get it in a snap? Also, the visa starts from date of issue and lasts 30 days, so you don't need to worry about it possibly expiring before you even arrive.
