Travel across the Sinai

Any warnings or suggestions for travel across the Sinai peninsula next month? Has anyone visited St. Catherine Monastery recently? Are the roads as bad as suggested?

We just got back from Egypt and I will offer this, the roads asren't bad but they do step up random road blocks in random places. As we weren't driving ourselves I don't know what the reaction would have been, however groups, being cabs, small buses or cars of western tourists were waived through. However, Egyptians had to leave identity cards with the security when entering market places, when they were driving.

It is very easy to hire a cab for the day at reasonable prices. If the price they quote you seems high, just remind them that it is posted in town what are the reasonable rates for travel.
