Train to Mombasa?

Has anyone taken the night train to Mombasa lately? Is it a viable option, or should I fly instead?

Its by no means luxury, but doable. Get a sleeper and you will be alright.

It will take about 10-16 hours from Nairobi. I did it once and wont do it again (although glad I did it once).

The train is pretty dirty and slow.
You can't see anything out of the windows. The breakfast in first class was OK but diluted orange juice and just not great.

You need to check your carriages security... we were fine but there are stories of stow-away thieves. There are plenty of askari (guards) so you should be fine.

To put it in perspective... you can fly for about $100 return and it's a 45 minute flight.

Next time (if ever the planes are grounded) I'd take my own pillow to aid a restful night sleep.
