tour guides in israel

what would be the appropriate down payment for a guide? How long in advance should it be?

The appropriate down payment is what the guide asks. If you do not like the amount asked, than obviously the guide is not the right fit for you. BTW many, if not all guides demand a non-refundable down payment. THis is because they are researching and organizing your trip. If you cancel, they have still spent the time . In terms of how long in advance--if you find a guide you really want then you send the $$. A guide will not consider him or herself to be firmly booked until they have the funds. If you procrastinate you may find the guide you want has booked with someone else.
