Tipping at safari lodges and camps

Need advice on tipping at all-inclusive safari lodges in Africa. Haven't read anything about this practice or if anything is expected. Any info is appreciated.

We just got back from South Africa, stayed at Kirkman's Kamp. They had a box where you could put tips for the staff. We tipped the guide and tracker directly. Wilderness safaris gave me some guidelines for tipping. They quoted both dollars and rand, depending where you are going.

Guides: US $5 or R50 per person per day.

General staff: US $3 or R35 per day per person.

Trackers: US $3 or R35 per guest per day.

By "all inclusive" I believe you are referring to "all meals" and safari activities.

This doesn't include the people who provide services (except management) such as your guide, driver or ranger, a tracker, camp staff (waiters, bellperson, maids, kitchen) - while paid a salary, tipping for performance is usual.

There is an entire thread on this subject just a few weeks back. So do a search on "tipping" where you should find details. If other questions after reading those posts, I'm sure fodors.com posters will have answers for you.

Sandi is correct. Do some research.

You tip: ranger - tracker, if you have one - administrative staff (in the box in the front office - your butler and/or the person who serves your meals, makes you drinks after game drives.

Note that in some camps the ranger will prefer to pay the tracker - here you give tracker tip to ranger.

Whether the lodge is all inclusive is irrelevant regarding tips.

Follow guidelines from your agent or from the lodge. And add to it for anyone who gives you a very special service.

Take the cash with you, planning in advance how much you'll need.
