Time of year? Is December/January too hot? August too cold?

I am planning a trip to South Africa next year and need to figure out my work/school schedule.

I know April-June is the best time, but I'm not sure I can make that happen...August, December, January seem more likely.

We would want to go to cape town, safari and ideally drive up the coast...any suggestions????Thank you!

December and January are mid-summer months and Cape Town is a winter rainfall area. August is the wettest month in Cape Town and, as a Capetownian, I would suggest that you do not consider August at all.
For safari in the Kruger Park area December/January can be very warm but very often there is a lot of cloud cover to keep temperatures down. August is a fantastic month for Kruger - dry and warm in the day, cool in the evenings.
To do both I would go for December/January but bear in mind that it is peak holiday season so book well ahead.
