Thoughts on proposed S. Africa itinerary (CPT, KZN, KNP)
Hi all,
This is our currently proposed itinerary. Please let me know what you think. I worry there may be too much driving.
We have been to Cape Town several times before, so we won't be rushing around whilst there. Everywhere else will be new to us.
Day 1 - Arrive Cape Town about noon.
Day 2 - In Cape Town
Day 3 - In Cape Town
Day 4 - In Cape Town
Day 5 - Fly early to Durban and drive (c. 3.5 hrs) to Drakensberg mountains
Day 6 - In Drakensberg walking / seeing rock art
Day 7 - In Drakensberg walking / seeing rock art
Day 8 - Drive to St Lucia area (c. 6 hrs)
Day 9 - St Lucia area
Day 10 - St Lucia area
Day 11 - St Lucia area
Day 12 - Drive to Kruger NP Part 1, stopping somewhere (Ithala?)
Day 13 - Drive to Kruger NP Part 2, entering park that day.
Day 14 - Kruger
Day 15 - Kruger
Day 16 - Kruger
Day 17 - Kruger in morning, and then to Johannesburg (via Blyde River Canyon)
Day 18 - To Soweto for day, and fly home late from Johannesburg
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

We spent nearly three months on a road trip around South Africa but started in Durban and ended up in Cape Town. I was glad we started with Durban and really liked it there but CT was way more impressive and we were glad we ended there. We tried to limit driving to around 3 hours and apart from a couple of occasions, very nearly achieved that. Three hours doesn’t seem to bad but it can get very wearing keeping an eye out for potholes even on the major highways. I see one six hour drive in your itinerary. We had one of those and really wished we had made it a shorter drive by staying overnight somewhere. We have done a LOT of road trips all over the world and South Africa compares well with any of them but we did find it tiring. If I had my time again I would have opted for a bigger , more powerful car.
You don’t say where in the Drakensberg you plan on going. It’s a big range. We spent a week driving from Underberg and Sani Pass to Clarens stopping at many places along the way. It’s a long way with a lot to see! We also headed there FROM St Lucia as it was a logical route for us but you seem to be heading back to St Lucia ( or maybe my geography is just not that good!)
We chose not to go to Kruger, mainly because of the drought at the time so have no comments re that park. We did however do a lot of self drive safaris in the national parks - Hluhluwe-iMfolozi was incredible as was Addo. Thendele in teh Drakensberg was nice but not as impressive as teh others. From St Lucia, don’t miss a drive up to Cape Vidal.
some photos and more detail of a few of the places we visited can be found on our blog @ https://accidentalnomads.com/categor.../south-africa/ - must get around to finishing it sometime!
