thoughts on Guidebook for Jerusalem and for Petra?

I'be been browsing on line, not sure if I can tell which is a good choice for one guidebook. I enjoy history, religious as well as secular and I want insights into what I will be seeing on a 9 day trip.
I'm wavering at the moment between Fodors if I can find a recently-published one, or Eyewitness DK.
Comments appreciated.

Unfortunately, with tourism down in Israel since 2000, nobody has recently updated their guidebooks. With that caveat, there are two that I would recommend: Rough Guide and Footprint. In general, I think that the Eyewitness Guides are too superficial, a lot of pictures, but not much practical info. Fodor's is ok, but both of the guides I mention give a lot more information about the "non-major" places.

Even the Footprint book is a few years old, you're absolutely right, no one seems to have updated their guidebooks in at least a few years.
I have a map, we've hired a guide and the itinerary is set, I've done some pre-trip reading on the history, and may leave it at that. No guidebook--that would be a first!

If you hired a guide, than you're in good hands. I am sure you can find some good books in Israel. Ask your guide.

fodor's Israel guidebook is your best bet. I'm here now and it is a big help.
