Yes I will admit it was definitely a go-go-go but I guess that fits my personality.
And I would love to go for a longer period of time however our work scheduled do not permit that and we can't save days from one year to the next to accommodate a longer trip. We make do with what we can get.
Either way we had two awesome trips to Africa and look forward to going back.
How to hit the highways and byways of New Zealand this spring though! Maybe this fall???

Are you seeking New Zealand info now Neuman? How exciting. As with Africa, 4 years on a yacht, would offer you a lot of flexibility, and it would be a great way to view the fjords, in every season.
Have a great time and hope to see you planning another Africa trip soon.

ellenbw,
Did almost the same thing you are wanting to do. I recommend JNB as base and doing a self-drive safari at KNP. Routes are well marked and you can enjoy the animals at your own pace.
Night safaris understandably must be done in a tour group. No self-drive at night in KNP.
I flew into Livingstone,Zambia (cheaper than going to Victoria Falls, ZM). From Livingstone you can do affordable one or multi-day safari's to Botswana or even walk across the border to Zimbabwe.
Here's a sample of one of my self-drive trips from JNB

Wow, such fabulous advice!!! Thank you, Thank you! I had not looked at this board for a few days but have talked with a friend who did 3 weeks in Kenya and Tanzania last year with her family. Her descriptions of the experiences got me so fired up! I am so excited about planning this trip... now to get DH fully on board... And I am encouraged that we will not have to spend $12K+ each and still have a fabulous safari.
Sandi, I had to chuckle when you mentioned bungee jumping off Victoria Falls bridge... although I might fantasize about it (but NOT do it!), my DH would never, ever consider it!
