things to do in Stonetown

Can anyone recommend some things to do in Stonetown...I am planning on staying there overnight before heading to Pongwe and need some suggestions on activities! Thanks!

If arriving ST early in the day you can arrange a Town Tour of this World Heritage Site... very interesting with a guide and vehicle to visit areas at some distance of one another. Otherwise, with a map you can try navigating on your own, but few street names, winding alleys, lots of touts and as mentioned some sights not close to one another. It's easy to get lost.

If arriving on the afternoon flight (those after 2pm), there's not much time till sunset (6:30pm) to do/see much. But there are some interesting restaurants with great views as the sun sets. If afternoon arrival, you might want to arrange the Town Tour for next morning before heading to Pongwe. If not the Town Tour then maybe a stop at Jozani Forest or a Spice Island Tour.

I'd definitely recommend a guided tour of Stone Town. If you don't have time the afternoon of your arrival, you could do it the next morning (cooler then, anyway.) There is a "shopping street" near Tembo House where you could spend an afternoon. It's within walking distance of the Serena, as well. One of my favorite ST restaurants is Monsoon, near the Forodhani Gardens. It's on the sea side of the tunnel(you'll know what I mean if you approach the Gardens.)

It depends when you are coming in and where you are staying.

sandi gave you an outline for a morning arrival and/or an afternoon arrival.

ShayTay..........gave you another option if you are squeezed for time.

The least you should do is walk down the seaside walk along Mizingani Road...it leads into the "tunnel " that ShayTay mentions.

The Mizingani road goes right through the City Gate House...it is aroad going right through the middle of a building.!!!

Right beside this Gate House is the Forodhani Park..right along the water and it is a nice walk inside this Park( which has been renovated and painted up and manicured lawns ... Grand Opening was about June 30 2009.....

just walk along and look at the Arab fort and next to it the "House of Wonders".

Keep walking another 3-4 blocks and you are at the end where the Port is.

This is the least you should do if pressed for time.

If you have time to get a tour guide then for sure get one.
