Tel Aviv airport to Jerusalem on Sabbath (9pm Friday)

Hi,

We are arriving at 9pm on Shabbat. What's the lowest cost way to get to Jerusalem (Old city, dropped by a gate) for 5 people.

Do the sheruts run on a Friday night?

Since it's 5 people, would a fixed price taxi be the best option?

Thanks so much in advance!

Yes, Nesher Sherut operates on Shabbat and the fee is 68 NIS per person. For a private taxi the fee for 5 people is 325 plus approx. 15 NIS more for the additional 3 passengers and approx another 5 NIS per suitcase. You will need to tell the dispatcher that you need a larger vehicle and will probably have to wait a bit as a larger car is called - a standard taxi cannot take 5 people.

As you know the taxi will only be able to take you as far as the gate of the Old City (with few exceptions) - where will you be staying?

Thanks so much. This helps a lot! Staying near Jaffa gate. We will walk the last bit... thanks for the taxi breakdown!

Joy:

Sherut? Not if you value your lives, IME!

The wildest, scariest, death defying ride imaginable, hearts in our mouths for every mile from Jerusalem to TA on a Friday night! I still don't think the tires ever touched the ground and that was many years ago. One woman passenger and her young son kept screaming.."slow down, please slow down!"
to no avail. Sherut drivers are a class unto themselves. Maniacally suicidal, I would say. Take two regular taxis for your group and for your peace of mind...it's only money.

Tower - I'm sorry to hear of your experience with Nesher - but your one experience does not reflect the true picture - yes, Nesher drivers are not the most polite individuals in the world and yes, Israeli taxi drivers can be more aggressive than you may be used to - but on the whole Nesher is a reliable, viable alternative for transportation to the airport

We took Nesher last month and the ride was fine, not scary at all.
The driver was quite helpful in calling our landlord so he could meet us.
Another couple on the sherut was quite annoyed that they had to wait (literally) 2 minutes for our landlord because the driver didn't want to leave us alone on the street at almost 10 PM.
The price from TLV to our apartment in Jerusalem was NIS 64 per person.
