Teaser from Kafue
I'm at Lusaka airport awaiting transfer to Mfue. Just completed 7 days in northern Kafue NP. It was brilliant. Saw Lions every day. The first 6 days each featured "new" Lions, while days 6 and 7 saw "repeat" Lions. In all, 20 separate individuals. Among them the Busanga Pride -- 2 large males, 4 females, and a cub. These Lions climb trees!
Also featured were several Leopards. We watched a Leopardess attempt to hunt Puku (unsuccessfully). Later, we found her at night, drinking from a stream. With a cub! When done, she picked him up in her mouth and carried him back to the den which was nearby. Wow! This cub was estimated by our guide to be ~3 weeks old, so we were undoubtedly the first humans to witness it. Kafue really delivered (Wild Dogs also seen but, sadly, no Cheetah). Next stop, the Luangwa valley (N&S) for 11 days. Should be great! Will not have another chance at internet until returning home on Nov 1, so cannot reply to any questions until then. Cheers, rickmck |
Outstanding Rick! I'm very excited for you, wonderful cat sightings and the small leopard cub will certainly stay with you forever.
Great to hear of such productivity in Kafue. I hope the rest of the trip is just as brilliant! |
Hi rickmck
Your last seven days sound great for the cat viewing! Seeing a female cat carrying a small cub is still on my photography wish list. Besides the cats, what else of interest did you see? Kind regards Kaye |
Wow, amazing sightings indeed.
A great teaser, looking forward to reading more! |
I think you came up with a new definition of 6-paw--new lions for 6 days straight.
What to go RickMck and Kafue. |
