Masai Mara Map now available

I uploaded my Masai Mara waypoints into Google Earth. Lot's of work still to be done here, but you can see the lodge locations, migration river crossing areas and major roads.

http://www.go-safari.com, then Kenya then Masai Mara.

Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman.

Steal This PC by Bill Gates?

Probably not, but Eben has mentioned there's some program that will make your computer somehow Google Earth compatible.

very cool, nice touch showing the wildebeest crossings. One suggestion--as nice as the national geographic pictures are, sometimes the title obscures a location. I had a hard time finding the Serena [going to the index helped] because of the overlay of a picture title.

Yes, I normally disable all layers (bottom left panel) except Terrain.

Another tip, under Tools - Options, set your elevation Exaggeration = 1.5 Then the rift escarpments on the west of the Mara shows up very nicely, and the Ngorongoro as well. Since these areas are not very high, a bit of an exaggeration makes a big difference without distorting the view.

Using GE, I like to fly around to the top of the hill (just west of Olonana) and look out over the Masai Mara. It pretty much looks like it did when we had sundowners there while staying at Olonana!

Wail, I'm missing something. All I can find are static images and the text is too small to read and I can't zoom in or anything...

I AM compatible with Google Earth as I've used it before.

Very Cool!

Will not be going on a safari until next August and if you still need some pictures of the lodges I will send them to you then.

Kavey - are you inside Google Earth when you cannot zoom, or are you looking at the static sample pics I have for each park?

Jack - you can always increase your font size from normal to large inside the "appearance" folder of the display properties of your computer. I use normal though and I also have 1280 by 1024 but on a 17inch monitor. On my laptop it is 1024 by 768

You beat Mitch to it!

Do you have coordinates for Kicheche? Also I think Mara River Camp has been closed for sometime now, has it not?

I can send you some pics from Kenya when I return in December.

Hi Patty

I have an interesting problem with the Masai Mara region - lots of waypoints but my notes are messed up! These were taken a few years ago before I realized that marking waYpoints is easy; keeping track of them is hard!

Now I cannot remember which camp is which (there are sooo many outside the Mara) so it will take a little time to retrace my steps.

Isn't it amazing that there is NO accurate map of the Masai Mara region available! I have noticed that some camps and agents are hesitant to reveal their locations (I contacted a few recently to doublecheck my coordinates). On their web sites they claim to be "...IN THE MASAI MARA...!!! Some even have pictures of the Masai Mara with their camps slam bang in the middle of it - while we know they are more than a hour north!

About Mara River Camp - I don't know but will find out when I add current information and pictures in the coming weeks.

Napamatt - yes, GE is addictive as my red eyes can attest.

Thanks for the tip about disabling the nat'l geographic photos and increasing the elevation--much better. How do you do the "flying" around the hill west of Olonana?

Re Mara Map: there's a very good printed map of the NR available for over a year now:

Re Mara River Camp: it's closed for at least one year now.

Thanks Mitch

No, I am talking about a map of the Greater Mara region, not just the reserve itself. There are just a few lodges/camps within the Mara and I visited all of them at some point in the past so I am not interested in a Mara map!
