Tanzania and where else?

We are planning a trip to East Africa. We are thinking 6 weeks and no more than 8 weeks. I've always wanted to visit Madagascar. Nancy thinking gorillas. We can travel anytime between July 2006 and June 2007.

What are the "must do" and "must see"?

Where do you suggest we go?

What time of year should we go?

How much time should we spend in a recommended area?

We enjoy birding but this is not a must do since there is so much else to see and do.

I would like to limit our dollars to $30,000 for the two of us.

Thanks for any recommendations, suggestions, books, safari companies, lodging places, etc.

Nancy and Tom

What about some quality beach time in Lamu on the east coast of Kenya? Much nicer than Mombasa!

Are you thinking Southern Tanzania too?
Mahale, Katavi, Ruaha, Selous? That would take some time also.

I've always wanted to go to Madagascar too.

I'd highly recommend seeing the gorillas in Uganda and/or Rwanda.

July-Sept are the driest months with the greatest concentration of animals near water sources. Also the most expensive months.

If you were interested in hiking or canoeing, you could also consider Zambia-Zimbabwe.

A book recommendation: Africa's Top Wildlife Countries by Mark Nolting.

With your time and money I would do the classic northern circuit of TZ (tarangire, manyara, crater, serengeti (location depending on time of year)AND the southern circuit mentioned above.

You could start with the gorillas, shift to TZ and then finish in Madagascar.

Do a search in this forum about gorillas to find info on that component. Do a search for the different TZ circuits as well (may want to search by park name as well). That will give you a good idea about what appeals to you most.

Re timing the TZ circuits here is a website from a safari company that indicates best time of year for various countries and parks. You've received the reccommendation for the Nolting book.

Extremely popular places like Mahale book well in advance--something to be aware of for travel summer and early Fall 2006--which would be a prime time to go.
