Tanzania airport

From the US which airport is best to fly in to Tanzania to go on a safari? American has codeshare service to DAR, but there is also Kilimanjaro. Which is the better location?

Also, is a visa needed for a short (1 week)visit to Tanzania?

Depends on where you're going.

If you're doing a northern circuit itinerary (Tarangire/Ngorongoro/ Serengeti) then Kilimanjaro (JRO) is the most convenient airport.

If planning a southern circuit safari (Selous/Ruaha), then DAR is more convenient. DAR is also convenient for Zanzibar.

If you need to use FF miles or something and can only get to DAR, that would still work for a northern itinerary. You just need to add a domestic flight between DAR and JRO.

Yes you need a visa. The cost is $50. You can either apply at the embassy in advance or purchase one on arrival at the airport.

Thank you Patty. We don't know the specifics of the safari - last minute plans -- but do you know where (north or south) is best for a June safari?

Ideally the northern circuit, but at this point many of the accommodations are already booked - lodges, permanent tent, seasonal camps... though mobile camping is an option.

The southern circuit will be better if arriving DAR, but with short time, you'd have to fly to the Selous and/or Ruaha - usually 3 to 4 days at each. There are small camps here, many tend to be expensive, though you may want to consider the Fox Family properties.

You have the possibility of FF tickets, but what kind of budget (per person) are you considering for your stay in-country? Lodging on average will range about $300+/person/night (including your meals and game drives) but that doesn't include flights such as from DAR to/from Selous and/or Ruaha. Or if you want to visit the northern circuit flight from DAR to JRO/Arusha. If heading out to the Serengeti, you'll need a flight to or from depending on whether you visit here first or last. And then flight back to DAR.

You've got a lot of decisions to make in a very short time.
