Table top mtn & Robbens island

Yes, a busy day. Reserve for the Robbens Island trip the day before and book an early departure. You'll be back early afternoon and should have time to do Tabletop. That was our plan - we just didn't do the mountain because it was so overcast.

I might even suggest calling SA and booking Robbens Island in advance of your trip! We did this before leaving Canada (in Feb 2008), as we heard that they often sell out peak times weeks in advance.
Unfortunately, when we went to Table Mountain first thing one morning, we were told that it was closed for the next few hours due to high winds - so we never did get to see that spectacular view!
Cheers, Pamela

Hi szev, yes as already said, one very busy day. Personally I would do them on two separate days.
I have been to Robben Island 3 times and every time purchased my ticket just before leaving without problem. Booking in advance of course will let you be sure of your ticket but just wanted to give another view point.
Table Mountain is awesome but it is very weather effected, the cable car can open and close several times over the day.

Yes. I did both in one day. Robben Island first, and Table Mt. later in the afternoon. You can stay till sunset and get one of the last cable cars back down. It's lovely walking up on the mountain.
Also, I only visited Robben Island once, in May 2006, on a warm, sunny, beautiful Sunday. I bought my ticket just before the boat left with no problem.

Szev,
You most definitely can do Robben Island and Table Mountain on the same day. If I were you I would attempt to go to RI on the 09h00 ferry as this then results in your returning to the V&A mall at 12h30, thus giving you lots of time to ascend and enjoy Table Mountain. Needless to say the aforesaid will all be totally dependant on the weather but that’s a chance that you simply will have to take with regard to pre-purchasing tickets for Robben island. I disagree with anybody who suggests that you should wait to purchase tickets on the day. My experience is that you simply wont be doing the journey if you take this advice. As an example right now the Robben Island journey is fully booked for the next 9 days. The tough part of my advice is that the RI tickets are date interchangeable and not refundable (Although I do know of cases where refunding has taken place). In effect this means that you should have another day available in case the ferry does not ride on the day for reasons such as weather etc. Thus my suggestion is book the ride for as early as possible in your Cape Town stay as this will probably leave you with further options in case you need to make a change.
Table Mountain, if open, should be quite easy to ascend even if you go on any ferry up to the 12H00 RI ferry. All you need do is catch a taxi from the RI Nelson Mandela Gateway up to the base station of Table Mountain (15 minute ride) after your RI visit.
Enjoy our great city when you vsist us.

I just got back from Cape Town, and we did Table Mountain late in the day which was fortunate because bad weather moved in and closed the next day's rides.
Our Robben Island trip was cancelled, again due to bad weather, and there was a six day delay in getting another date.
My advice, if you want to ensure seeing the island; book for two successive days, and either go twice or charge the extra cost up to insurance.
