swimming capetown area

Are there any beaches in the area with warm water in february thank you

Dr_Andrea Jan 29th, 2006 08:04 PM

No....but the beaches are still beautiful. They have great sand. Some people were swimming in them, but it was really too cold.

I hate to disagree but there are certainly a number of beaches that provide great swimming, in warm water, in February. They are all on the Indian Ocean side of the Cape Peninsula - try Muizenberg, St.James, Fish Hoek, Seaforth, Boulders and across the bay Strand and Gordons Bay.

Dr.Andrea is correct about the Cape Town beaches being wonderful however she is way off with her NO answer to your warm beaches question. 50Something is spot on as far as warm beaches are concerned. There are MANY in Cape Town and to us in Cape Town warm means 22C = 76F

Hope you enjoy your beach swimnming in our wonderful city.

Would that be accurate in hermanus and Kleinmond as well - thank you

50something Jan 30th, 2006 11:37 PM

Unfortunately Hermanus, and Kleinmond, seem to catch the cold current for some odd reason and more often than not the water temperature is around 16 to 17 degrees, even in summer. However, both Voelklip and Grotto beaches (in Hermanus)are very popular and you can get lucky with the water temp. I have known the temperatures to be well above 20 degrees but it is more often a lot colder.
