Suggestions for Mombasa

We will be in Mombasa for a total of 6 days in late March/early April. Any suggestions on what to do in or around Mombasa? Day trips, restaurants, markets, etc? We're doing a safari to Ngorongoro + Seregeti, Tanzania. Would Tsavo be worth it or redundant? Is Lamu safe or Zanizibar better? Any help is appreciated.

While I have not yet been to Kenya, I will go on a land excursion from our cruise which docks in Mombasa in March, 2000. We had a choice of 7 excursions and were unsure of which to choose. My niece was in Kenya in the Peace Corps as was her fiance. They gave us this advice(hope it's not too late for you):

Top three choices:
1. Masai Mara is the Kenyan part of Serengeti, amazing with everything you can imagine.
2. Tsavo/Saltlick: will see elephants, zebras, rhinos and hippos.
3. Amboseli/Tauta Hills

Recommended we not do the excursions to:
Lamu, Shimba Hills or the Rift Valley. Navaisha is ok, but no Masai Mara.

Suggestions for Mombasa (Todd worked there for two years):
1. Fort Jesus - tours by locals there
2. Old Town - in the Arab section
3. Ricodas restaurant - serves authentic swahili food, eat with your hands

Also, be aware of safety issues in Mombasa.
