Suggestions for apartment in Cairo or Giza PLEASE!!!!!!!!

I am 26 years old and will be traveling with my boyfriend in December to Egypt. We are planning on staying in either Cairo or Giza and just taking day trips out from there. Due to the fact that we are traveling on a very shoestring budget we will probably be renting an apartment for a week or two. I was wondering if it would also be best for us to stay in Cairo instead of Giza. Also...we would like a really safe area near at least one of the attractions. Thanks for any suggestions.

P.S. I have already looked at all the sites but would like suggestions from people that know the area or even better yet live there.

I don't know of any flats available for such a short time frame, but just a couple of notes that you should know about before even attempting to rent here for this period

1 - DO NOT tell anyone you are "girlfriend and boyfriend". You are married. If you say you are girlfriend and boyfriend, that will cut your chances of finding a flat down to nil as many owners would not rent to you that way. You will increase the number of landlords that will consider renting to you if they believe you are a respectable married couple.

2 - Just come into this aware that it will cost a lot of money to rent a place for only 2 weeks. Anything shorter than 3 months is considered SHORT TERM and the rents are significantly higher than they would be otherwise. 2-3 weeks will be high - maybe not as high as taking a hotel room for the same time, but you might consider one of the 2-3 star places instead. I suspect they might be cheaper.

Good luck and have a great time in Egypt.

As a former Cairo expat, I would second Casual Cairo's recommendation that you pass yourseves off as a married couple, as otherwise you'll get no respect and may find yourself the object of some very unwanted attention! Egypt welcomes tourists but never forget it is a strict Moslem country. You would definitely be better located in Cairo than in Giza for most attractions. There is a small hotel in Zamalek popular with visiting archeologists which might be more what you're looking for. Think it's named after an ancient Egyptian god...

I spent a few days in Cairo in 2004, and we stayed in a hostel called the "Dahab Hotel." The hostel has private rooms, clean restrooms, and is located on the roof of a building in a very neat, colonial part of Cairo. The hotel is just a 5 minute walk from the museum, and costs about $2.50 a night for a room. The staff is very friendly, and I felt very safe there (we left our belongings at the hostel during the day, and nothing was taken). I highly recomend it.

Here's a link to their website:

If the rental is what you really want to do...there is a website called vacationrentals.com You will find rentals for all over the world.... You probably can find a deal on a great local small hotel or hostel for much cheaper....

I went to that vacationrentals site. Interesting.

BUT - this is what it says about Egypt:
