Suggested Safari Reading?
Hi All - I'd like to bring a few good books with me on safari to Kenya & Tanzania later this year. Any suggestions for some good/interesting/entertaining books pertaining to Africa for safari? Thanks!
P.S. Right now I am reading The Language of the Land: Living Among the Hadzabe in Africa by James Stephenson - about a guy from NY who goes to live with the Hadzabe in Lake Eyasi for a year - very good book and I will be staying at Lake Eyasi for a couple of nights so even more interesting to me now! |
Hi,
I'd suggest the following titles, all set in Kenya Bennum, David - Tick bite fever (autobiography of growing up in Nairobi during the 1980s) Keating, Barbara and Stephanie - Blood sisters (novel) Atwood, Melinda - Jambo Mama (autobiography of life in Nairobi for this ex-pat) Any novels by Frank Coates Kuki Galllman's books of her life in Laikipia Maathai, Wangari - Unbowed : one woman's story (Interesting autobiography of the Kenyan founder of the Green Belt Movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner) Paine, Katy - The Sound of thunder (Life and research among the Amboseli elephants) Poole, Joyce - Coming of age with elephants (similar to above) Ricciardi, Mirella - African story (autobiography of this interesting African family) Ridgeway, Rick - Shadow of Kilimanjaro (an exciting overland trek from the mountain to the sea) and these set in Tanzania Grzimek, Bernhard - Serengeti shall not die Douglas-Hamilton, Iain - Among the elephants (Life and research among Lake Manyara's elephants) Packer, Craig - Into Africa (Life and research among the Serengeti lions) You might also like to try Peter Godwin's books and the Zanzibar Chest by Adrian Hartley Happy reading, Pol. |
Out of Africa
Last King of Scotland Gorillas in the Mist Blood Diamond IMAX: Serengeti IMAX: Kilimanjaro (movies, I know) The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway (book) Steve |
For a practical book to use on safari, I would recommend Mark Nolting's "African Safari Journal." It's a great planning resource with tons of helpful information all in one book. You can keep a journal in it while you're on safari, as well.
I also enjoyed "Language of the Land." Are you going out hunting with the Hadzabe? Be prepared for a LONG hike! I'm not in shape, but survived it. They were quite patient with the 6 of us. |
