For those of you that have done the canoe and are still around, which canoe operator did you use? How many hours of paddling did you do a day? What month did you go and how was the weather? Thanks!

I must say the hippo attack pics momentarily made me rethink the whole idea

KathyAZ, thanks for sharing that funny story.

Glovey, What an adventure - thanks for putting up your pics. My dog, that hippo must have had big teeth - yikes! Good for your guys getting back in the canoe. I might have hailed the next cab out of Dodge.

I'm with Rocco on this. It has nothing to do with interface between humans and animals. I can assure you, this was not the first canoe to be attacked at Mana Pools, even Arusha National Park. And, it's not unusual for ones camera equipment to go the way of the passengers when the hippos want their right of way. Personally, I can deal better with lions roaring nearby then being tossed by hippos. Guess it depends on how much adrenaline you're up for.

Its all relative. Now if Rocco decided to do a trip like this one on the Luangwa River where the density of hippos was much higher then the Zambezi-

then he might be might be inclined to not worry so much about hippos.

Not something I'm about to do. Mekoro's are enough for me.

Do any of you canoers seriously consider the risks involved and how different they are from vehicle and even walking safaris? I'm interested in the thought process everone has gone through. Having heard some of the horror stories from professional guides, I'm neither going in the water, or sleeping on the ground without a tent.
