stellenbosch restaurants

Will be there in January and looking for nice restaurant suggestions for 4 including two kids. Under 350 Rand per person

Ellene I responded about Capetown on another post; I did not eat in Stellie proper so can't comment, but I will say that with that budget you can eat almost anywhere in the region. Three of us rarely spent much over 700 Rand and that figure is high for 3, or at least it was in the places we ate. Most of my meals (for one) averaged from 140-220 Rand in the Cape.

hi, ellene,

I just checked my notes and i agree with ek - 350R pp is very generous.

for 4 we rarely spend more than 800R and we usually ate 2/3 courses each and had a bottle of wine.

so with kids, you should get in well under that.

can't help with Stellenbosch restaurants, but we did stop at Spier which is on the way between CPT and S'bosch. they have a variety of very nice eating places -an african restaurant, an out door cafe and a deli to buy stuff for your own picnic. see www.spier.za.

good luck,

regards, ann

We are staying at spier, and wanted to do one night off property. Considering Le Quartier Francais, but it is 40 minutes away. Did not like Petit Ferme last time. Any other suggestions?

hi, ellene-

are you already staying in CPT - if not, you could be back in the city in about 30 minutes. you could see if an evening at Kirstenbosch would fit in with your plans - I understand they stay open late in the summer, and the restaurant may be open too.

as for the stellenbosch/winelands area itself, my Touring map of WEstern Cape [highly recommended by us] shows a number of wineries pretty close to spier. You could google to see which have restaurants.

We had the best food in the winelands at LQF. You can certainly eat here on your budget. I was afraid the place would be stuffy but it was lovely with wonderful food. We had not booked ahead there but when I looked at the place, and their menu posted outside, I reserved a table; fortunately there was one table remaining for the next night, a Sunday. But that assumes you are willing to do the drive back at night..

hi, again, ellene,

with the cost of taxis in SA being so cheap, why not get a cab to the restaurant and back?
