I've stayed at the Al Bustan in Oman and have twice been to the Ritz-Carlton in Doha for dinner. They are two quite different types of hotel and Oman and Qatar are also very different countries.

The R-C caters more for business people than tourists simply because there are few tourists in Qatar. Qatar is a quiet country. There is a huge upgrading/new infrastructure program occurring right now, but Qatar does not have a tourist industry or tourist pursuits in place - yet. In 5 years it will probably challenge Dubai in the holiday stakes but, in my opinion, it isn't there yet. However, they really are trying - I was there last week and discovered the shopping festival was on - quite amazing. And around October they have a culture festival where (last year) they brought in such stars at Pavarotti. There are always huge venues occurring - as I say, in a few years it will challenge Dubai, but it is still building up to that. The R-C has an enormous indoor swimming pool, an outdoor pool and (I'm pretty sure) a beach. I understqand they are building an island for beach pursuits.

However, having stayed at the Al-Bustan you will know what I mean when I say it would be hard to beat.

The Al-Bustan definitely has the edge at the present time.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi Gingerbaker

Thank you very much for your reply.
Last time Al Bustan was New-Year 2002/2003, and we felt that service and ambiance went down a lot, compared with previous years. All services were executed by Omani people (example: in the French restaurant we ordered at the head-waiter our diner and we got not at all what we have been asking for- -he misunderstood our menu-order!!)I agree that one day, they must be able to run the business on their own, but let them be first educated for that.
So, may I ask you one more advise:
We think to stay 6 nights at the R.C. at Doha, followed up with a 6 nights stay at the A.B. at Muscat. What is important to me? I like to meet and talk to other people
We like the Middle East, because one get value for your money, and that is in many cases not the fact in other holidays-destinations.
I give a penny for your thoughts
