Southern Tanzania or Zambia???

Which would you choose? Selous/Ruaha or Zambia to go along with Uganda?

Thanks,
Keri

Selous/Ruaha would be my choice. They are both marvelous areas for game viewing, but also tremendously scenic.

The only potential downside is that in theory there is no off roading.

I would also check out how easy it is to get to Dar es Salaam, as this is where most flights for these two parks start from.

Ken,

What month in the year did you go to Ruaha and Selous?

RE Dar Es Salaam - depending on where you are from, you can access it easily or not - from India, I think we can fly either Air India or Emirates via Dubai and get into Dar directly without doing Nairobi or Arusha or wherever!

Ok. Will keep it in mind for 2009 or 2010.

Hi We've been to both (well Ruaha and S Luangwa/ L Zambezi) and it's a tough call. Game viewing in both is great although depending on time of year you do have to work a little harder.

I fell in love with Ruaha and would still rate that as my best ever safari experience; the scenery is the most stunning I've come across in safari Africa and the whole experience of our trip was amazing. The trip report link is http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...4&tid=34489525

However there are some drawbacks in Ruaha in that when we were there you could not do night drives or go off-road which does limit the experience a little. You can do both these in S Luangwa.

I would also say that Ruaha is more remote than S Luangwa; we've been to the latter twice and each time I was surprised at the number of other vehicles we would see in a day; whereas in Ruaha we rarely saw anyone else and often felt we must be the only tourists in the park until we got back to camp.

Tough call but what a great decision to have to make!

Atravelynn,

"Dates have changed, names are the same!"

We can now go in Early September (arrive back home by the 18th).

Here is why I'd still say Selous/Ruaha. I think Sept or Oct is really ideal for this area. I've read info that cautions going much before Sept because you cannot navigate through areas that may be waterlogged.

I think much of Zambia has a wider range of months that are good. Although Kafue is at its best in approx. Sept.

If you were planning on places other than Kafue, then I think Selous/Ruaha, though I have not been.
