kawh--
I'm in a very early thinking about phase for a 2017 trip, but will only have 13-14 nights. Your trip sounds perfect, but sadly, I won't have that amount of time. If you had to shave your trip down to fit this time frame, I'm curious what you would eliminate.

My inclination would be to leave Capetown at 4-5 nights and eliminate 1 camp and Victoria Falls. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

hi progol... people posted this to me and now i will share as well... it will be the trip of a lifetime!

seems like you only need to eliminate 3 nights... unless you are counting your flight time.

i feel like the trip would not have been the same without these 3 things... a private reserve safari, a public reserve safari, and the chobe waterway area.

capetown is a great city... especially the oceanfront around it... but i would cut capetown down to 3 good nights (or out if you must) because it's the safari experience that you can't get anywhere else.

if you must, cut out victoria falls. it is gorgeous... but. however, if you do go to victoria falls, have our guide (and antipoaching expert) charles brightman, take you out for half a day. he is wonderful.

if you can absolutely only do 2 safari locations, do a private reserve...as night drives are so exciting and mysterious. and do chobe waterway... the waters are just alive with animals!!
hope that helps. i remember... so many choices... that's the hardest part.

Many thanks kawh,
It's very early planning yet, but I do appreciate your feedback.

I definitely am interested in visiting Capetown -and DH does like the idea of Victoria Falls...I imagine it would be 2 safari locations, with the time frame we have.

So as I get closer, I will probably contact Wild Wings and see what they suggest. I will also want to be keeping it to a moderate budget which is one of the (many) reasons your trip appealed to me so much. The luxe safari camps and lodges are tempting -- but way beyond what I feel comfortable spending. So it is tough!

progol... i will say that we travel all over the world and do keep a pretty tight budget... but these moderate (for africa) camps were pretty luxe to us!!

and i was sort of dreading Skukuza because it was sort of like public housing units in the park... and it WAS minimal and somewhat unattractive inside. BUT it offered a good night's sleep and we felt like kings when we were treated with such love and respect by simon... who was there to cook our meals on the lovely little porch. It ended up being one of our best memories.

loved the luxe feel of the private reserve, too. don't get me wrong! but one never knows which part of your trip is going to create the lasting memories!

Many thanks, kawh -- you've given me good information and feedback. Much time to sit with it and see how it unfolds, as we are still a long ways off.

I'm fine with a balance of some very modest places with some nicer places, though I must admit, I was shocked when I began seeing the costs of the safari camps!
