South Africa Itinerary and questions

Hi all,
We are going to SA in February, very excited. We are spending 3 nights at Singita Lebombo, 3 nights at Le Quartier Francais in the wineland area and 7 nights in capetown. Any suggestions? also, do I contuinue to take malrone while in other areas and does anyone know if you need yellow fever injection for this trip?

You do not need yellow fever for South Africa. You do not need to take malarone in Cape Town or the winelands -- BUT you need to start it one day before you hita malaria after and for a week after -- so you may need to take it while you are in Cape Town depending on your itinerary.

rosalind, I suggest you get advice from a qualifed medical practitioner and one who is definitely up to date with travel issues too.

That said, MPKP is correct according to my memory too. You do not need yellow fever for South Africa. You do not need Malarone for Cape Town/ Winelands but need to start taking it 2 days before going to a malaria zone and continue it for a week after leaving.

Hello,

Make a travel appointment with the travel specialist at your GP's office (if they have one) or with a travel clinic -- BA and Nomad both have travel clinics in London, or you can get advice from the London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine. Take your itinerary with you when you go. The doctor will be able to show you exactly which days you need to take Malarone -- as Kavey says, it depends on your itinerary.

You do not need a yellow fever jab, but you may very well need boosters for polio, tetanus, and other childhood jabs whose effectiveness fades over time -- many adults are not up to date on these.

Cheers,
Julian
