South Africa Itinerary

I went in on a good roundtrip deal flying in to Johannesburg. I'll be in South Africa for two weeks. I arrive Nov 5 at 8:25am and leave Nov 19 at 9:20pm. Does anyone have any ideas how I could maximize my time there and possibly see Victoria Falls as well, without taking any flights? Is that even possible? I would much rather see natural beauty than big cities any day though.

Thanks in advance if anyone can offer any advice.

Howzit dcrachuig,

If you want to see Victoria Falls but don't want to fly, then perhaps consider an overland safari that will also travel via Botswana (Okavango Delta and Chobe) and maybe even Kruger NP. If you remove Vic Falls from your itinerary, then consider the Baz Bus as a cheap way to see some of South Africa, such as Kruger NP and the coast from Durban down to Cape Town.

Cheers from Cape Town,

Going to VF will be difficult without flights. Darren gave a good option. But getting to the starting point might require a long drive.

My two favorite safaris involve driving yourself. If that's not an option, then contact Wild-Wings and ask about their Kruger Park/private reserve option - they'll pick you up at JNB, drive you to Kruger NP, take you on multiple days of game drives, drive you to a private reserve and drive back to JNB. Excellent reviews, great value.

Option 1 - Private reserve near Kruger, The Outpost in northern Kruger and Mashatu (there are les expensive options nearby) in SE Botswana. You can drive or get private drivers for all transfers. It's a great option because you visit three very different ecosystems and all are beautiful, lots of wildlife. We used Arathusa in Sabi Sand, The Outpost and Mashatu Tented. It was excellent!

Option 2 - we have done this one twice, so obviously we enjoy it, but you must drive yourself. Start off driving to Kruger or a private reserve in greater Kruger, drive south through Swaziland, spend a night at the golf/casino resort in Mbabane, visit St Lucia for fun water, beach, safari activities, and then go to Rhino River Lodge in the Zululand Rhino Reserve for a fantastic big five plus wild dogs (and so much more) safari experience at an affordable rate. Then drive back to JNB. It's all beautiful areas and the Indian Ocean is spectacular.

I've done both, highly recommend both! Both can be done in many price ranges, so they can be affordable or expensive.

Enjoy your planning! I just saw a flight around your timeframe for $535 from JFK. I'm very jealous that you took advantage and I wussed out. Have fun - you'll love every minute of it.

the flight from johannesburg to victoria falls is relatively inexpensive and easy. i HATE to fly, and found it to be pretty stress-free. we were able to fly nonstop back to johannesburg on our day of departure back to home and it was all pretty easy and time-efficient. ???
