"pixelpower - that is not what what I said. He was talking about prices being cheaper at private reserves in SA being a lot cheaper than anywhere in Kenya/Tz. I also did not say anything about top end lodging." -- adisonrr

Ummm... If you're speaking about private reserves, you are automatically speaking of the top-range safari deals.

Private Concessions, i.e., Sabi Sands, Timbavati, this term specific to South Africa... each with a number of camps housed on them.

In East Africa, Group Rances would be similar... likewise, with a number of camps/lodges sited on each. Such group ranches are outside the national parks/reserves. And, prices run the gamut from reasonably priced to luxury expensive.

And, I recall when we visited South Africa, visiting the private concessions adjacent to Kruger, our cost at Honeyguide on Manyaletti, was less than half the price we were paying (about $650/nt/person in '01) for Singita on Sabi Sands.

So, sometimes you are comparing apples-to-apples; othertimes it's apples-to-oranges. There's a price point for all kinds of travelers.

Sniktawk,

Last week, i watched a Discovery travel and living channel episode on CCA's "Tanzania under canvas" for a show on Great resorts in the world or something to that effect!

The host of the show dials the butler from his tent for a beer! and the show features all of the other stuff.... the most bizarre two minute clip of the host brushing a bush on a walking safari with very minor cuts and the guide make a HUGE FUSS with the bandages and band aids and all the other stuff....perhaps their idea of marketing???
