South Africa cultural historical

We shall go to South Africa for 10 days, our first visit. Next time we will visit Cape Town, but this time we will go to Joburg and up to Kruger National Park. We would like to learn about Soweto and the townships and would also like to learn about Afrikaner history. Has anyone got any suggestions about tours re cultural, historical, political issues?

Take a Soweto tour with Jimmy's Face to Face (www.face2face.co.za). Wonga is a great guide. They will pick you up at your hotel and take you to Soweto, a market, Regina Mundi, the new Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum (a wealth of cultural & historical info there), the tin houses and 'Beverly Hills',lunch at a new shebeen, etc. The Museum Africa near the Market Theater, Newtown, and the Apartheid Musum at Gold Reef City (why is it next to the casino?) will add a lot. SA National Museum of Military History covers the Boer war & the two world wars. Lunch or dinner at Gramadoelas (wonderful; next to Market Theater) will give you a taste of Cape Malay cuisine (do you dare try the mopane worms?) in an eclectic semi-colonial atmosphere. Note: this was the only place where I saw blacks and whites serving blacks and whites. If you can get to Pretoria, visit the Vortrekker monument & museum for an insight into the Afrikaner mentality.
