Pula,
How bad was the Vakona? The Bradt guide has a fairly negative review of Feon'ny Ala.

I stayed at Vakona, and its OK, nothing superfancy, but clean, good bathroom, decent restaurant, and only a short walk to an island that has some lemurs (I think pets that are being reintroduced to a semi-wild environment). I would definitely stay there again.

Vakona wasn't bad at all but it's not nearly as nice as they think it is! I'm quite sensitive about places with a superior attitude, especially when the place is merely nice. It's owned by an nth-generation french-Malagasy family (absentee ownership), a fact I mention just because I thought it was interesting -- I was perfectly comfortable.

I can see why Brandt gave Feon'ny Ala a poor review -- I had occasion to visit it and a) it's quite a big property, composed of small unheated A-frames that I would characterize as "roughing it" but b) it DOES have a delightful restaurant.

If I were to return, I honestly don't know which one I would chose; OK, I would probably wimp out and opt for the basic comforts of Vakona.

Thanks, guys! I'll be starting a new thread shortly with some more questions about our brief itinerary.

"Travel Africa" magazine has a "Guide to Madagascar" article in the current edition. That has some helpful info for someone planning a trip there. The magazine in published in the UK, but you might be able to find it in the US.

Thanks, ShayTay! Anyone know of any place in the Los Angeles area where I can buy a copy?

Why don't you ask them, via email, where to find a copy of the guide in LA? Looks like the circulations/marketing guy is at [email protected]

Just a thought

Everybody's going to Madagascar. That's great. More info on this gem of a destination will be helpful for those who have it on the longer list.

Feel free Kavey and Patty to put all your planning and pre-trip thoughts out there along with a post trip report.

Maybe you'll meet up there.
