Snorkelling and Trains

I am interested in snorkelling in the Red Sea in late December. I will be coming from Luxor so was thinking of Hurghada or el-Gouna. Can you snorkel from the shore or do you need to take a boat? Where would be the best place to stay?

Also, is it hard to make train reservations in Cairo or is it better to pay a travel agent to do it?

We snorkeled 12/1-6 in Hurghada. The water temp went from about 73 degrees to 68 in just a few days. Wore 3mm wetsuit 1st day & then added hood & vest. I believe you'll have to take a boat. Best snorkeling is probably w/dive boat. Loads of dive clubs associated w/hotels.

I know that Getaway Magazine has done many trips and features on the Red Sea.
There website is at www.getawaytoday.co.za
