For what it's worth to any future readers - it's really not hard to avoid snake handlers in the square. They're out during the day before the food stalls are pulled in near twilight. We found that they, like all of Marrakesh, are out to make a living and quite forward about it. BUT - unlike many other people, the snake handlers did NOT ever try to force the issue. People would jump out from no where and bang two chords (literally!) on a guitar looking thing and demand money for the performance or nearly throw goods your way and then announce a price when you weren't shopping. But snake handlers always asked if we'd like to engage. Once my wife did and he was quite careful about it all, making sure everyone was on the same page. As aggressive as I think of Marrakesh being, I wouldn't expect anyone to be pushing a snake at an unsuspecting passerby.

"One pic cost to my friend 150 dhm, around 13 euro. be carefull!"

proficiscorestvivo,

Did your friend negotiate the price beforehand or did s/he just take the pic and pay what they asked? I offered a guy $1 to take a pic and he accepted immediately.

Thanks for the laughs---and the information---everybody. I too am petrified by snakes and I expect to be in Marrakesh soon, so I'll put your advice to good use. ZZ

I don't mind snakes but I hate lizards. There was no valid reason to mention them here.

I guess he tryied, but not as much as you normally should. Btw is not so easy as you said. For example some days with taxi driver I have no problem, somedays I have to fight so much to take a taxi...
