Johan-
Have you ever thought about quitting your day job and pursuing photography full time? ;-) Your photos are magnificent, as always.

The sharpness and contrast are impressive!

What was the story with the lioness carrying the cub? I'm guessing it was dead? If so, do you know what happened?

africaddict Nov 17th, 2006 05:28 PM

Fabulous shots, yet again Johan :)
Did you use the 10.5 fisheye on some of those?

Cheers
Marc

santharamhari Nov 17th, 2006 05:43 PM

Thanks, Johan....Fantastic...

That youngish male lion(growling) is he from Lebala or one of the skimmer males from Duba? Thanks

Liked all the pics...can't pick between any of them....thanks

Hari

skimmer Nov 17th, 2006 08:38 PM

Thanks again everyone.

The cub was killed by one of the females of the Tsaro pride and the mother was eating it afterwards (Duba plains).

I used the 10.5 fisheye for some of the shots. It's a funy lens to play with.

And that young male is one of males from the Skimmer pride.

Best regards,

Johan

Great Pics Johan,
Is that Kalahari Hari in the group picture? Havent seen him for years.

skimmer Nov 17th, 2006 08:54 PM

That's indeed Kalahari Harry. At the moment he's managing Kwando together with his wife Monique and they are based at Maun.

Greetings,

Johan

santharamhari Nov 17th, 2006 11:23 PM

Johan,

For some reason i'm not able to see more than a few pictures each time i hit the link....

I just got to the second bunch of pics now, i see the group picture. Nice to see Harry, Monique and Spencer. Charles is hidden behind him. Who is behind the wheel in the following picture? Is that Joe from Kwara?

I am not able to access the pictures, after the pic of the owl at night. Will try again shortly.....

santharamhari Nov 17th, 2006 11:27 PM

Accessed the next bunch.....close up of Spencer. Hahaha. I'm on the phone right now talking to my sister to take a look at this thread and look at these pictures.....

Thanks
Hari

santharamhari Nov 17th, 2006 11:40 PM

Alright Johan, after many attempts i finally saw them all.....what happened was each time only a few would be displayed and originally i thought you just had about 10 or 15 pictures....the post by Bots made me check your link again....

Cheers
Hari

skimmer Nov 18th, 2006 12:07 AM

Hari,

I am glad you were able to see them all. Maybe it has to do something with the size of the files.

The person behind the wheel is Jame ( Duba Plains).

Best regards,

Johan

santharamhari Nov 18th, 2006 12:11 AM

ok, thanks Johan.....

Kavey Nov 18th, 2006 12:48 AM

Lovely pics - thanks so much for sharing!

lisa Nov 18th, 2006 04:30 AM

As always, your pics are fascinating.

The one of the cub in the mother's mouth is not easy to look at... some things are hard to fathom. I knew about the cub-killing behavior but I did not know they would actually eat the cub.

atravelynn Nov 18th, 2006 05:36 AM

A professional lot these photos. You captured the hyena interaction well. I liked the 3 lion cubs playing and what a contrast to the fate of that other poor lion cub. As Lisa mentioned, the lioness and bloodied cub shot was heartbreaking. It is an unusual slice of life in the wild that you witnessed and documented.

The wildlife jumps off the screen in your shots and the scenery photos are works of art as well.

Have you narrowed down the list of where to next?

cybor Nov 18th, 2006 05:40 AM

Stunning, Johan. I could hardly look at the cub pics., that's how well done they are - how many of us have captured a scene like that?

Your birds in flight are amazing - were you up high? The owl shot is so well done - how did you ever manage to not bath the owl in light and keep the background dark?

You pulled me in with that perfect zebra and didn't disappoint. Somehow, you even managed to make the often seen lions more interesting.
Many thanks for sharing;
Sherry

safarilover Nov 18th, 2006 06:35 AM

Absolutely stunning photos! I always enjoy seeing your work.

africaddict Nov 18th, 2006 10:30 PM

On the Owl image Johan, did you use a Better Beamer flash extender or just the standard SB 800?

Cheers
Marc

skimmer Nov 18th, 2006 10:49 PM

Marc,

I didn't use any of those. I made use of a tripod and speeded up the ISO to 1250. The spotlight was directed to the vicinity where the owl was sitting (but not full on).

Lynn,

My african list is already narrowed down. For the other destinations I haven't made my mind up yet.
Next year will be the last time to do 3 safaris in Botswana. The last safari next year in Botswana will probably be enhanced with a visit to Hwange and the Busanga plains in Kafue.

For 2008 southern and western Tanzania will be in the spotlight (Mahale/Katavi/Ruaha/Selous).
And in 2009 I hope to visit Uganda and Rwanda.
Gabon will be something for 2010.

And thanks again to everyone for the lovely comments.

Best regards,

Johan

Johan-

I am so glad that you came back to post this link for us - those pictures are INCREDIBLE!! Thankyou so much, and I am still waiting for when you publish you collection in a book - I will be the first to buy it as promised before!

You really are the BEST I have seen (and that says something as I am at the moment reading Beverley Joubert's Africa Diaries, which of course has some of her best stills in it)

julia1 Nov 19th, 2006 09:17 AM

Johan,

The images are stunning. Please tell me what camera you use and the lenses. I'm going on my first safari next year and am looking to buy a new camera.

Julie

skimmer Nov 19th, 2006 10:24 AM

Julie,

I am using the following equipment:

Bodies: Nikon D2X + Nikon D200
Lenses: 80mm-200mm F2,8, 200mm-400mm VR F4, 10,5mm F2,8, 18mm-70mm F3,5-F4,5.

Lynda:

Thanks for your appreciation but I consider myself as a serious amateur no less no more. In terms of African wildlife photography I am a big fan of Richard du Toit, Michael Poliza and Frans Lanting.

Best regards,

Johan

napamatt Nov 20th, 2006 07:28 AM

Johan

What's the bird shown diving immediately before the Jackal and what's the bird shot in Namibia?

one2travel Nov 20th, 2006 07:49 AM

Johan,

Once again, fantastic!

Although a couple of the photos were heartbreaking, most were breathtaking. I especially thought the pelican skimming the water was stunning.

Thanks again. You give me something to aspire to.

skimmer Nov 20th, 2006 08:32 AM

Matt,

The first bird is a whiskered tern (Duba plains) and the second bird is an african red-eyed bulbul (Sossusvlei).

Best regards,

Johan

cooncat3 Nov 20th, 2006 11:02 AM

I've looked at these over and over. Well done as always, Johan. Of course the lioness and dead cub are very difficult to look at, but as Lynn said, it's certainly a part of the wild that most don't see.

Cheers!
Sharon
