If I remember correctly, I believe Johan shoots with Nikon cameras, the D2x and D200.

Johan, do you use a tripod or monopod when shooting? The clarity and crispness in your photos leads me to believe that you do.

And do you use any type of filter on the lens other than a UV?

Wow! We leave for Botswana tomorrow and this just the perfect pre-flight teaser!! Amazing shots!

Any information on the photo equipment you used would be great. I am bringing a Canon 5D with an additional 75-300 zoom lense, but was not planning on bringing a mono or tripod as we can only bring 12 kg of luggage. Do you need one?

Granny Joan -- I think the animals you are asking about are sable antelope, although I am not 100% sure (could be roan antelope, as I am not really well versed on distinguishing them and have seen each species only once).

I used the following equipment:

Nikon D2X + 80mm-200mm F2,8;
Nikon D200 + 200mm-400mm F4 VR + sometimes teleconverter 1,4 + tripod.

I use a warming filter 81B.

For a small lens 70mm-300mm F4,5-F5,6 I wouldn't use a monopod or tripod.

Although game can be easily seen in August/September it's not my favorite time of the year because the sky can be very hazy because of dust/fires.

If this was all in one day it would have been too much.

On a single drive, I am mostly focussing on one or exceptionally two scenes. This can be everything (from nesting bee-eaters, an active waterhole, a leopard on the prowl).

I won't say that good pictures can't be taken without a private vehicle but it really helps me. Because most cars are filled with people with different intrests (unless maybe you are travelling as a group and are interested in the same animals), guides have to compromise all the time.

That's the reason also that I will never be travelling in a group (even with a professional photographer)because I have to share the vehicle and even change seats with people with maybe a different intrest as mine.

One last thing: people are sometimes disappointed that they haven't seen this or that animal (mostly predators) but many forget that this concessions are not fenced and animals can freely roam. Also habitat changes/hunting/diseases have a major effect on predator numbers and I strongly believe (although my opinion is not scientifically based) that since I first visited Southern Africa predator numbers are going down significantly.

I formed this opinion on my own sighting reports (+/- 30 trips in the last decade) and of what I heard from some of the guides.

So my advice is to be happy with what you see and think that those cats are not around every corner (even in places which are still promoted in such a way).

Honestly, Johan these are the lovliest photos of African wildlife I think I've ever seen.

You have some fantastic and very difficult bird shots in flight.

It is really difficult to pick a favorite but if i had to choose one i´ll go with the hyena,great lightning and composition.
