Side trips from Marrakesh

Am planning a one week trip to Marrakesh and was wondering: would it be worth it to go to the desert for two nights or would it be too rushed? The main purpose of the holiday is to relax and if it will be too much of an effort then we will just forgo the trip. Otherwise what would be best, a day or overnight trip to the Atlas (maybe Kasbah de Toubkal) or Essaouira? Thanks for the advice.

A two day trip is certainly possible. Go to M'hamid from Marrakech, it's closer and better than Merzouga - in my opinion! Three days will give you an easier ride (travel time is 8 hours plus each way) and more opportunity to check out Ait Benhaddou and Telouet on the way.

Most people who have done the Atlas, Essaouira and the Sahara tend to say the desert was the most memorable. There is a lot of time in a car, but it's a beautiful, fascinating trip.

The Atlas, certainly Imlil, can be done as a day excursion from Marrakech. Kasbah Toubkal is wonderful, but normally very popular - book as soon as you can.

Essaouira can also be a day trip, but you should take at least a night in town if you can. The road is easy, distance is just over 100 miles from Marrakech.
