short safari suggestions?
Sorry if this post is a repeat - I thought I'd posted, but I can't find my post, so I'm not sure. (I'm a newbie, in case you couldn't guess! :-p)
So, my new husband and I are going to visit his family in Johannesburg, and while we're there, I'd like to do a safari. Unfortunately, we only have 2-3 days that aren't filled up with family time. Any suggestions on a short safari? I saw some 2 day safari's on the Kruger National Park website. Are these worth it? What should I look for/avoid when booking a safari? I assume that most of the safaris are normal picture taking ones, not hunting safaris? Thanks!! Avlena |
You could fly from Johannesburg to Kruger (there are lots of daily flights) and rent a 2WD car to see Kruger. Its a great park for self-drive safaris and you don't need a guided safari to see the park. You can learn about lodging availabilty on www.sanp.org

also, i don't know if it matters or not, but we'll be traveling there in late November/early December.
Thanks!! |
thank you for that link. do you know which area is most popular? which gate to drive to for a self-drive kruger?

drive to the closest gate according to the map - maybe the one near Pretoiuskop (Nume Gate ?) Popular areas r Skukuza & Satara |
The southern areas, around Skukuza, Satara and Lower Sabie, are the most popular since they generally have the densest game viewing. I flew from Johannesburg to Kruger (when I visited in 2000, there was an airport within the park, but that may have closed). You can fly to one of the airports near Kruger and pick up a rental car -- no need to do the 5-hour drive from Johannesburg.

Does budget limit you to self drive?
