Maps with camps, parks??
Hello everyone~ I have done quite a bit of searching on the 'Net, but haven't really come up with a decent resource for such maps. Can anyone recommend one to me? (A resource.) As a somewhat visual person, I think I would have better luck planning my trip if I could actually see where these camps are - I mean in proximity to one another, etc. Thanks for any ideas.

Which country/ies? Kenya and Tanzania or Southern Africa?
There have been a few links posted over the years with maps of the Mara, and I believe one for the Serengeti. But, sorry, I don't have the specifics. A search might located these links for you. In fact, I believe "bwanamitch" recently listed a link for a map. If you do a search on his name and get his website you may find some maps there.
However, I remember looking at them and also those I've obtained from the Kenyan and Tanzanian Tourism Boards - even these have camps noted in places they aren't situated. Whichever map you get your hands on can only give you an idea and many camps/lodges won't even be included.
On one map, they showed Cottar's camp up near Siana Springs when it's south of there on the Tanzanian border. Besides, even if camps seem close to one another, the actual distances can be very great. Also, alot of these maps are dated without current/new camps/lodges indicated.
But why not let us know what specifically is of interest and maybe from those who have been/know can help.
If anyone has a better resource, I'd be interested also.

Sorry Sandi - yes I was thinking of Kenya/Tanzania for starters. I don't need it to be perfect, just to get a feel for which part of the park a camp is in, for instance. Any particular guidebooks have such a thing? Mitch's maps looked sort of like a satellite image or something. I'm looking for something more rudimentary - to give me my bearings!
thanks!
thanks!

Cooncat, most guidebooks have that kind of maps. I know Lonely Planet, Bradt and Rough have them.
And here you have some:

Hi cooncat:
This would by no means be complete and I can't vouch for its accuracy but it would give you some relative locations I would think.
Africa Dream Safari includes maps of the TZ northern circuit areas with lodges/camps located on them. Here is the link for it.

cooncat, for southern africa, this is my favorite interactive map. Just click on the country and it'll give you maps in different levels of detail.

The Bradt Kenya guide has pretty good park maps with most but not all of the lodges and camps. Their Tanzania guide is a little outdated. It's very difficult to find accurate maps listing all of the lodges and camps as so many new ones are opening and the maps become obsolete. You really have to rely on multiple sources for a complete picture.

I had the same issue when I was planning my first trip -- wanted to see where the camps actually are located.
Mark Nolting's book Africa Wildlife has great maps for this on all the countries. It also has descriptions of each camp. I thought it was a great resource.

One way to find a specific camp is to send an email asking for the latitude and longitude of the camp. You may then plug those numbers into Google Maps or download Google Earth and see exactly where the camp is located. You may need to experiment with the format (the way the lat & long is writen) to get the proper result.
Here is the lat & long of Kaingo which is located in Zambia.
-12° 55' 0.00", +31° 55' 0.00"
This is writen in the format that Google Map responds to so you may want to copy and paste it into the search window. When you are shown the proper map click on the word "satellite" in the upper right corner (no roads are shown for Zambia) and you'll see exactly where the camp is located. All camps should be able to give you their lat & long.
Hope this helps,
Mike
