SERENGETI in October
 

Hi!!!
I'll visit the Serengeti in October; I'm planning to spend 4 nights there.
As the migration is supposed to be up north at that time of the year, would you recommend 3 nights in the north (Lobo) & 1 in central Serenegti (Seronera region)? Or 2 nights in the North & 2 in Seronera?

What are the best areas to see cheetahs in October?

Lobo is not really north, and still a 3/hr drive to true north along the border between countries in the Kogatende area. Unfortunately there are few inexpensive camps in this area. Believe the most reasonably priced at KOG would be EMC camp - Exclusive Mobile Camps - and when we were in the area this past Oct, there were no guests.

You might do better staying in Central and arranging with your guide for a daytrip w/picnic and head north.

Cheetah, don't ask me... I've only ever seen one (1) during various visits when farther north than Central. But, as with game viewing anywhere, there's never any guarantee what will be seen from day-to-day. I'm sure others have come about cheetah during their visits.

The north is not the best place for cheetah. Central is better. My cheetah viewing has been zero in the north for about a week's worth of time over a couple of trips, even less than Sandi's.

Central is more likely to have cheetah.

Do you want to see wildes in herds or crossing the river? If in herds, you can stay at Lobo and drive north to locate herds, assuming sizable numbers have come back to Tanzania. If you want to witness a river crossing you need to stay at one of the (expensive) camps farther north along the Mara.

Can you possibly devote more time? That's always easy to suggest when one is not paying the bill.

But if you are spending 4 nights in Serengeti out of an entire trip, re-allocation of your days to more time in the Serengeti might pay off if your goals are a wilde cross and cheetah.

Cheetahs follow gazelle. Usually on short grass plains. I am copying you a link to a good piece of research that explins this in more detail. (see page 28)

Gol Kopje is widely reputed to have the highest density of cheetahs in the Serengeti and I have never been disappointed but I have always been there at the beginning of the rains.
