Savute Safari Lodge

I am considering staying at Savute Safari Lodge for 4 or 5 nights Apr 16-21/07. I have read that the Savute Marsh can be very productive at that time of year. Can anyone confirm this?

I have also booked a 15 day mobile camping safari leaving from Maun Apr 22nd. The safari includes 2 nights Nxai Pan, 2 nights in a housebout on the Zambezi, 1 night in Livingstone, 3 nights Chobe (Serondela/Savute), 2 nights Moremi, 2 nights Xaxanaka in the Delta and a final night in Maun.

Would Savute Safari Lodge and this mobile safari be a good combo? I do want the experience of a lodge and the rate for a single (no supplement req'd) in April is $360 USD per night, so relatively affordable. All advice appreciated. Thanks.

If you have Google Earth, you can get a high resolution view of the Lodge with its water hole in the Savute Channel. You will also be able to see the Savute Elephant Camp and Savute Public Campsite.

Luangwablondes,

I've used Google Earth before, but can you give us a hint as to how to find the Savute locations? Thanks.

I dont know your exact question, but, to the best of my knowledge this particular lodge is the one in Chobe national park, not the Savute in the linyanti....

Copy and paste to section under Search, Fly to -18.565241 24.057162
That will take you to Savute Safari Lodge. To the South on the Channel is
Savute Elephant Lodge- 575 metres. Directly to the East of Savute Safari Lodge.

860 metres directly East is the Savute Public Campsite Ablution block- that is smack in the middle of 10 campsites. This is the campsite I normally use that overlooks the channel. This area is frequented by ellies in the camps(campsites) and lions are heard nearly everynite. I've had hyenas and Ellies walk so close to me in the light of the campfire, its hard to believe.

Thanks, I just tried the coordinates you gave me, but it took me to someplace near the border between the Sudan and Chad. Any more hints, or am I just not doing it right?

Go to Tools, options, view, Lat/lon- and you want degrees. Click Apply Settings and then OK.

Then I copied and pasted 18.565241 24.057162. Thats incorrect. What was previewed and what it should show is the minus sign in front of as follows -18.565241 24.057162

Instead of the Sudan/Chad border, you are in Botswana.

Luangwablondes,

Thanks, the minus sign is what I missed when copying and pasting. I was only a few hundred miles off. That is amazing resolution for a place in the middle of nowhere.

Great to be able to see this via Google Earth. Thanks! But can anyone answer my original query....i.e. is Savute Safari Lodge a good destination for 5 days in mid-April???? Thanks.

I stayed at Savute Safari Lodge for 2 nights in May two years ago. We saw lots and lots of elephants and prides of lions and cheetahs. I stayed at room #3 and the waterhole in just right in front of the room, with elephants drinking all the time.

Since you are already doing a mobile safari, I think it is good to stay at a lodge for a few days as well but just wonder why do you choose to stay before the camping safari and not after.

Thanks llee. I am actually planning to stay at the Lodge in between an 18 day tour of South Africa and the 15 day mobile safari. On both these multi day trips I am likely sharing lodge accommodation with a stranger in the first instance and tent accommodation with a stranger on the safari. So it's a chance for a little luxury and and the privacy of my own room.
