sahara desert

Hi all

I have limited time so I need to choose between essaouria or the sahara desert. I will base out of marakech(3-4 days). I hear it takes a good 10 hours to the desert(Erg chebbi is the one to go to) . It seems awfully long to get there but some say it is worth it whilst essaouria seems atypical pleasant beach town. For those that have visited both, suggestions?

Essaouira is a lovely town, easy to get to by grand taxi or 1st class bus, an authentic place as well as a tourist destination if you walk just a couple of blocks from the more touristy part, not just another typical beach town. I've been there several times and would choose it any day over a long drive to a made-for-tourists desert campout.

Erg Chebbi is more like 12 hours plus stops from Marrakech and seeing as there's only 10 hours of daylight and driving at night is a real no-no, you need a minimum of four days for the visit to the sand dunes.

Erg Chebbi isn't the Sahara, for that you need to go south from Laayoune.
