Safety in Jordan?
My husband and I are contemplating a trip to Jordan. Does anyone have any current information on how safe it is for tourists? Thanks.

My husband and I just returned the end of Dec. We went with Grand Circle Tours for 5 days as an extension of the Egypt trip and felt very safe.Tourism is down 90% so we were welcomed with open arms. Jordan is BEAUTIFUL! I wish we could have spent more time there. Others in our group also went to Israel and had a wonderful SAFE trip. We are sorry we did not do that part of the trip also. We seem to hear only the bad news about these places and get a very slanted view of what is going on. We were nervous about going to Egypt and Jordan but decided not to cancel and we are very glad that we went.

Thanks for the response. Exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I know what the Dept. of State says, but they are so often alarmists.

Jill, did you do any roaming around on your own in Jordan, and, if so, did you feel safe doing so? Did you have to travel with security guards?

Judy,
We did not go off on our own. We were busy all day with the tour so it did not give us much time on our own. We did have a security guard on the bus at all times with us. He mostly read the newspaper! We toured all the sites with just our program director...no guards. It was a wonderful experience. If you go be sure to visit Petra.....truly amazing!
I have been to Jordan a couple of times in the last year for 2-3 weeks at a time, mostly on business but did enjoy the sites, too. Safety was no more an issue than most big cities -- stay alert, particularly after dark, don't draw attention to yourself, and use common sense. Petra was fabulous, the Dead Sea resorts are a wonderland oasis, and Jerusha (sp?) was interesting. Most folks are friendly and helpful, but I wouldn't advise taking that as a sign that you are free to discuss anything -- meaning Mid-East politics -- with them. The only time I felt a especially cautious was when a specific warning had gone out from the Embassy and I was near a mosque during Friday prayers that was clearly not preaching love and peace. We moved on quickly and the rest of the trip was fine.
