Let me put a plug in for Zambia. I've not been to Botswana, but am told the lack of crowds, small camps, both rustic and posh, and wildlife compares well with Botswana, and supposedly less expensive. We spent time in villages (not tourist villages but ones that our guide, Victor, took us to) and a local school. Great experiences, wonderful people. We had many up close encounters with all the big animals except rhinos, went on canoe trips, walked and did night drives. Pix and report are at Zambia--what an amazing journey, and Zambia what an amazing journey--South Luangwa. We finished off the trip by spending an afternoon at a craft market in Lusaka on our own. Never felt uncomfortable at any point (well, there was the hippo). Oh yes, and the official language of Zambia is English, so there was no problem communicating.
Rocco Morelli of Destiny Africa put the trip together.
Finally, I too, would love to visit Zimbabwe, but I have been reading just too many bad things about the instability and nasty things that are going on there now.

This site is divided between the south saharanites and the northern africanites.
So here's the northern africanite perspective.
Tunisia is the safest from all standpoints -- no bombings, no crime -- with ruins, beaches, a french flavor and a secular moslem culture. It's ruled by an absolute dictator who keeps things safe.
Egypt has the odd bombing, but it's quite safe otherwise. I can walk alone at night by myself without a worry. And it's got the pyramids, beaches, snorkeling. cruises down the Nile, the Sahara desert. Everything, really!
Morocco also has the o ddbombing, but I think that it's safe in terms of crime, too. I don't think it has antiquities, but it's got interesting things to do.
Algeria and Libya are not places for you.

Oh absolutely Hari. The responses were mostly, if not entirely, oranges, so I thought I would throw some apples in.
When I said divided I didn't mean it perjoratively -- just that here people interpret the word Africa differently. For some people, it means sub-Saharan Africa only, others include the entire continent. And not many of the Fodorites write about both places. So, I wanted to make sure that she learned about North Africa, too.
I've no problems with sub-Saharan Africa for a trip or ten. Would love to go there myself.
