Safe to visit South Africa?

Is it safe to visit South Africa, and large cities in it such as Johannesburg, Pretoria + Cape Town?

The short answer is yes! (I live here.)

Johannesburg is not a tourist city and although there are some nice places to visit in the vicinity, I would not put it specifically on an intinerary. There are some really scruffy areas. (Does this differ from any other big city such as London or New York?)

Pretoria - good restaurants. Very safe. Not that much to see from a scenic point of view.

Cape Town - have to go!! She's got it all.

The safety - as anywhere else, be alert (but not paranoid) and don't wear your $100 000 dollar diamond necklace - not a good idea. Find out from the locals where to go and where not.

And there is a LOT to see outside the cities - I would rather try that!!

See www.southafrica.net for general travel info.

Don't bother with Jo'burg - it's dangerous. Cape Town is perfectly safe. The advice given above is sound.
