Safe to travel to Uganda?

Hello -

I have always wanted to go to Uganda to see the mountain gorilla habitats.

I have heard conflicting reports regarding safety in those areas, ie. guerilla insurgencies and tourist targeting.

Can anyone comment on the current travel conditions in Uganda? Has anyone been recently?

Thank you very much for your help! Mia in NYC

Actually, you'll see more on the Rwandan side, and the area is totally rebel proof, which, depending on the month, is not always the case in Uganda.

I just returned two weeeks ago from
a 10 day trip to Uganda. Areas like
Bwindi, Queen Elizabeh NP, Kibale,
etc are safe. Murchison Falls is
questionable and the NE is out. I
felt very safe in Bwindi and hiking to see the mountain gorillas is wonderful
and not to be missed! Also, I traveled by myself with just a driver.

Mia:
I did the gorilla trek in Bwindi a number of years ago, and still correspond with my guide there. He just recently wrote and said they had habituated a new group of gorillas, and that everything was safe there. His name is Levi Rwamuhanda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. PO Bos 862, Kabale, Uganda. Also, I still write to the guide I had for my 3 week trip to Uganda. His name is Cliff Kisitu, PO Box 21777, Kampala, Uganda - he speaks excellent English, and was a great guide. I also correspond with several school teachers there, and they report all is well. I would not hestitate to go again, and am in fact planning to next summer.
PS - I'm in Rochester, New York.
