Safe to travel in Kenya

We are planning a trip to Tanzania this summer and I was thinking about including parts of Kenya. Is traveling there safe? What tours are recommended?

I hope so, because we are traveling to Kenya in August. We will be self-driving through the Mara and then down to Tanzania. Robin

it's as safe/unsafe as parts of NY, LA or any other place.

if you are in the wrong area at the wrong time - anything can happen.

as long as you use your common sense it will be fine!

I returned from Kenya last week. It was a tremendous break that yielded some superb game viewing.

But to answer your question, assuming that your concerns about safety are as a result of the electoral violence earlier in the year, safe as could be. I travelled by road and air and found there to be no issues or any cause for concern. Maybe a few Matatas, busses and trucks that barreled down the street was about the closest I came to feeling unsafe.

As safe as Tanzania, I think. Or lots of places in the world.

What tours? Any of the major national parks that are usually part of a standard itinerary or the sites around Nairobi should be fine.

I do not wander Nairobi alone to minimize problems. But I'd go to the National Museum and snake park, Karen Blixen's home, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where you can adopt an ele, or Nairobi National Park with a guide or with a taxi set up by my hotel.

Traveling with a reputable company to Samburu, any of the camps in Laikipia, Mt. Kenya, Aberderes, Lake Nakuru and surrounding lakes, Amboseli, or the Maasai Mara are places I'd go.

Do you have specifics yet for the Tanzania part of your trip? You may be better just adding more days in Tanzania than including Kenya. That's from a cost/logistics standpoint and not as a safety issue.
