Safaritalk interview: Anna Tolan - The Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre, Zambia

Anna Tolan is a trust director of The Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre in Zambia. Since 2001 it has taught school children of the Luangwa Valley the importance of wildlife and habitat conservation: in the interview with me she touches on a number of subjects relating to the centre, including the recent floods (the centre is located on the banks of the Luangwa River opposite South Luangwa National Park, approximately 16km south of Mfuwe, Zambia.) An indepth look into emigrating to Africa and the setting up of a project which is truly beneficial to both conservation efforts and the local community.

The interview can be seen on www.safaritalk.net at

Matt thanks for posting this link. A fascinating story. Amazed what people can do when they follow their passions.

Some interesting insights into the political power of the local chiefs. Would love to know which local camps opposed their presence and how their relationship is now with any of the existing camps.

We were hoping to visit Chipenbele on during our wonderful stay at Luangwa River Lodge, but ran out of time the day we went to Chiutika School and local villages.

I can tell you theat Sean, our wonderful host/owner of the lodge expressed real disappointmentt that we were not able to go to Chipenbele, and has a close relationship with them.

We went to Chipembele on our first trip to Zambia. What a great place it was, though school was not in session, we could see the good they were doing. The pet warthogs were cool to play with and Steve and Anna are the nicest people with huge hearts living their dreams.
