Hi John

While using your monopod in the vehicle, how did it go with the vehicle vibration?
Or did you simply wait or request for the ignition to be switched off?
I believe, however that some Lodges are hesitant to do so?
Cheers
Marc

Marc,

I can't remember any occasion when I took photos with the engine still running. Our guides/drivers have always switched off very promptly, whether asked to or not. Yvonne has taken photos of elephants chasing our vehicle, but engine vibration is hardly a concern when you're on the move ;)

John,

Yvonne's (& your?) pics of the aggro elephant cow charging from the other side of the spillway was taken with the engine running.

I vividly remember not taking a shot as the engine was running but I did enjoy watching the ellie without worrying about getting a good image.

That image is embedded in my mind like many other memorable incidents over the years.

Geoff.

Geoff,

Well, there you go! I still don't remember it, but Yvonne has confirmed your recollection. The excitement of the moment (well, several moments) must have taken all my attention...and/or old age has dulled the memory! :) Kanawe must have decided it was prudent to keep the engine ticking over in case the ellie kept coming. The shots turned out OK, anyway. Thanks, Geoff.

Marc,

That alters my answer a bit. I guess I have to say taking photos with the engine running has been a very rare event, and engine vibration doesn't pose much of a problem with such subjects as charging ellies! :D I wouldn't make a habit of it, though, no matter what form of camera support was available.

John
