Safari and Zanzibar - any advice?

We're planning on visiting Zanzibar in September this year, but first we want to go on a safari. Should we go to Kenya og Tanzania? Which is best? Is one week enough, or should it be more? I would also like to know if it's OK to find a good place to stay in Zanzibar, preferably in Stone Town, if we don't book in advance. How about the weather in September? Glad for any advice!

Kenya is optional; Tanzania essential. I would recommend going to the Serengeti and nearby parks in Tanzania. They are less touristy and the Serengeti is absolutely amazing. The Ngorongoro Crater, east of the Serengeti, is another great place, even without all the wildlife. We visited these two and two others in a six-day tour and it worked well.

In Zanzibar, we stayed at the Milimani Guesthouse in Stonetown (we made reservations upon arriving in Africa two weeks before). Nice place. Definitely take Mr. Mitu's spice tour around the corner (avoid cheap imitations). Walk to the central park for the nightly little carnival on the bay -- better food and more fun for less money than the restaurants. You're on the right track -- the best parts of our vacation were Tanzania safari and Zanzibar.
