Sabi Sands in November or December

Am strategizing (fantasizing) about the next few years of trips and am wondering about the weather in Sabi Sands in November / December (we can travel over US Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Years).

We were there in May and had fabulous weather and spectacular game sightings. For those of you who have been around November / December, how would you rate this time of year?

Sabi Sand in late December will be like the song: "Hot, Hot, Hot." Better to move it up to November, or earlier.

I think Christmas/New Years is popular time for safari camps for both SA residents and Europeans. Anyone confirm this? If so, plan ahead.

I made a twelve day trip to the Sabi Sands, Timbavati, and Kruger National Park last December (about Dec 1-12). It was hot every day, but each place I went to (except Pafuri) had AC so it really was not a problem. We saw the big five just about every day. We also saw the big five just driving the access road from Singtia to MalaMala. There was a massive lightning storm the night we were at Lion Sands that took out all power for the entire reserve. That was pretty fantastic.

You are correct, Tom - our safari lodges are VERY FULL during the Christmas/New Year period! Definitely advisable to plan ahead!!

I would incorporate Thanksgiving making it TG the last day of the trip. Weatherwise and sightings wise that would be my shot.

Happy Planning!

Toshi,

November/December is the exact right time of year to see the giant sea turtles come ashore on the NE coast of South Africa to lay their eggs. You need to go to Thonga or Rocktail Bay Beach Lodge to see it. It also happens in Mozambique, but, unfortunately the turtles are not protected there.
